Mornington Race 2

OCEANS BLUE (9) brings the strongest race form after placing at both starts, and her first-up second at Kyneton reads well given she was beaten a length after racing wide without cover as a short odds-on favourite. Fitter now and profiles very well for this. FLARE OF GRACE (5) is the key unknown, but a Pakenham trial win for the Ben, Will & JD Hayes stable gives her hope on debut having jumped out well. Respecting first time out. CIRQUE DE COCO (4) has race experience on her side, was beaten only a neck at Geelong two runs back, and has trialled twice for her return. Look for a betting push. SAVANINA (12) is bred to have ability as a full sister to G1 winner Pasadena Girl and has Jamie Melham booked. Watch the betting.

Returns from a four-month break after finishing eighth on debut in a Mdn at Sale, beaten six and a half lengths on heavy ground when at long odds. She did make some late ground from well back, but was never a serious factor. Debut was plain at Sale, so improvement is required to trouble these.

Makes her debut after three Flemington trials, the latest a fourth over 800m last month. Simon Zahra has had debut winners from a modest sample, and the family has produced city winner Le Ferrari, but there is no race form to properly anchor her against several with stronger exposed or trial profiles. Hard to rate above the main hopes without race experience.

Returns from a five-month break after finishing fourth at Cranbourne, beaten four lengths after pressing forward and weakening late. The run prior was a much sharper third at Geelong, beaten a neck at big odds in a Mdn, and she has since had two trials, latest a third at Mornington. Should be ready to run well fresh.

Starts her career with a Pakenham trial win behind her, which is the right sort of lead-in for a debutante in a maiden with mixed exposed form. The Ben, Will & JD Hayes stable has a sound debut record, and the family includes winners around 1100m to 1200m. Brings one of the better first-starter profiles and can run very well.

Comments

Finished last at Geelong first-up, beaten over 12 lengths in a Mdn after racing three-wide without cover throughout. That gives her some excuse, but she was unwanted in the market and also well held on debut in Open grade at Cranbourne. Blinkers go on and barrier four helps but needs to lift.

Expected Settling Position: Midfield

Makes her debut from barrier one after four trials, most recently a fifth at Camperdown over 1000m. There is not a great deal in the trial record to push her ahead of the better-credentialed first starters, and the stable's small debut sample is limited. Likely to require the race experience.

Produced the best exposed form in the race when second at Kyneton first-up, beaten a length after racing wide without cover and still giving a strong sight as the short odds-on favourite. She was also third on debut at Bendigo, beaten just under two lengths as a well-supported favourite. Second-up, she looks the one to beat for strong connections.

Debuts as a NZ$80,000 Karaka purchase and a full sister to G1 winner Pasadena Girl, so the pedigree clearly gives her appeal. Her three Pakenham trials have been steady rather than flashy, with a fifth in the latest, and the stable's debut strike rate is modest. Trials are steady but respecting key jockey booking.

Begins her career after three trials, the latest an eighth at Mornington over 900m. She is a $25,000 yearling purchase from a family that has produced debut performers, including Sweet Jazz and Dane On Tour, but the immediate trial evidence is only moderate. Looks one for later rather than a strong winning hope.
