Alice Springs Race 3

Happy Birthday Cathy Starr Hcp

Prize Money: $28,000

BLACK ZOUS (3) gets the nod off the strongest current form: he won a BM76 at this track by just over four lengths two starts back, beating LIMITED RISK, then held third behind Golden Tunes last week despite being slow to begin. His two wins and five placings from seven at this track and distance put him on top. BAHAMA BAY (1) has not been close at his past two, including fourth to Golden Tunes last start, but his 1200m record is deep and Stan Tsaikos has won two from three on him, so he is the main place or winning danger if he sharpens up. TELLEZ (6) is harder to dismiss after winning a BM64 by just over five lengths as a well-supported favourite, though Open grade is a firmer test than that small-field success. BOY BIG (4) ran second at big odds last week and has extensive track-and-trip form; his task is to prove that it was not simply a spike after a heavy defeat the run prior.

Comments

Was fourth to Golden Tunes at this track last week in provincial company, beaten eight lengths after starting among the outsiders. The stronger pointer is his BM76 fourth to Black Zous the run prior, when bumped at the start before closing from well back. Recent margins are the query, but he can land in the placings.

Expected Settling Position: Midfield

Comments

Resumed with a fifth to Black Zous in a BM76 at this track, beaten ten lengths, but the stewards noted he raced wide throughout and he now gets meaningful weight relief. His Darwin run two back was plain after a slow start, so the recent figures still ask for improvement. Track-and-trip record is strong, but recent form says each-way only.

Expected Settling Position: Off Midfield

Backs up quickly after finishing third to Golden Tunes at this track last week, beaten six and a half lengths after being slow to begin, and that effort followed a dominant BM76 win over Limited Risk when he led and cleared out by just over four lengths. Third-up suits, he has two wins and five placings from seven at this track and distance, and the returning rider knows him well. Proven at this track and distance; the one to beat.

Produced a better result when second to Golden Tunes at this track last week, though he was still beaten just over six lengths and went around at big odds. The BM70 run prior is the concern, finishing second last and beaten over 16 lengths after jumping awkwardly. Has to prove he can repeat it.

Was solid when fourth to Magarten in a BM76 over 1400m at this track last week, beaten three lengths, and he comes to an easier meeting back at 1200m. Two back he was well-supported favourite behind Black Zous but could not quicken when asked. Minor claims.

Made full use of a BM64 assignment at this track last week, beating Verbosity by just over five lengths as a well-supported favourite despite jumping awkwardly. That was a sharp reply to his 1400m failure behind Mr Jones, where racing keenly told late. Open grade asks more, but current form keeps him in the placings mix.
